Jampit and its neighbours sit in the Ijen plateau, a vast valley within the shadows of the active Kawah Ijen volcano, from which sulphur smoke clouds are constantly emitted. The volcano provides more than just a dramatic backdrop to the farms, as centuries of activity have enriched the land with abundant minerals that ultimately enhance the coffee with such richness and depth of flavour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe coffee is a mixture of Java typica and some catimore derived cultivars. It is hand-picked by the local community, many of whom live in villages situated within the farm itself. The freshly picked cherry is washed and fermented in a spotlessly clean wet mill situated on the farm before being sun-dried and stored for conditioning. After dry milling the beans are hand sorted by an army of women who meticulously remove broken beans and defects. Such activity results in an incredibly consistent and reliable coffee with great character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe farm is Utz Certified thus ensuring environmentally responsible agricultural practices and social conditions of an extremely high standard. The housing on the farm is excellent with many of the homes provided with vegetable plots and an area to keep the family goat. The estate has a well-run school and sporting facilities that include two swimming pools and several tennis courts, and when the drying patios are not covered in coffee they become netball courts and football pitches. There are eight mosques on the farm and at least a dozen pagoda-topped prayer rooms dotted around for the convenience of the faithful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a definite favourite of ours \u0026amp; we're delighted with this new lot. Classically full bodied with a soft acidity that you'd expect from a top grade Indonesian coffee. It's very smooth and silky, with a figgy jam character with vanilla finish. The coffee is grown at around 1,200 - 1,500m with the plantation spanning across 468 hectares. However of this, around 250 hectares is used for coffee cultivation, 30 hectares for coffee nurseries, 10 hectares for coffee processing and 100 hectares for Natural Reserve to preserve the delicate ecosystem in the area. The remaining area is used for growing vegetables, composting, worker facilities and guest houses.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRasuna is a Sumatran coffee variety with an unusual bit of family history. It is generally described as a cross between Typica and Catimor, bringing together two varieties with very different strengths. The idea was to get some of Catimor's productivity and disease resistance without giving up the longer productive life associated with Typica.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's still a relatively uncommon name outside Indonesia, but Rasuna has become particularly associated with farms in North Sumatra, including Wahana Estate in Sidikalang.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll the coffee is grown using only organic fertilisers from the composting facility on-site and the farm is has shade canopy trees planted throughout.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe estate has set up a housing scheme for workers and a clinic which provides medical assistance for the entire workforce for free. Before that, he was primarily producing tobacco, which was a difficult crop to work with due to its high demands of agrochemicals. After his first harvest in 2005, Sumarno began to learn more about the coffee market, the agronomy behind the crop, and different processing methods. He is known throughout this region thanks to his extensive coffee knowledge, and now runs a government-owned coffee farm on the slopes of Mount Sindoro. Various producers throughout the village are also part-owners of the farm and assist with the daily tasks of the farm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSumarno is supported by Belift, a coalition of coffee professionals seeking to improve the income of producers in Indonesia. The group is comprised of three young men, originally from Indonesia, who studied in the US, only to return to their home country to open their own coffee shop and roastery in 2015. This then expanded to a coffee academy in 2017 whereby they began to work more closely with producers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are developing unique relationships with coffee producers specifically in the Central and East Java region, to showcase the hard work of coffee producers throughout this infamous region. Belift are also educating producers about newer processing methods to help incorporate more Indonesian farms into the specialty market. He applied for an Agricultural Lease via the PNG government and was granted a portion of land that would become Madan Estate. The name refers to a small hill located within the farmland. After purchasing the land, Coleman went to work and drained the land and built roads to pave the way for coffee production. During this hand-construction, various archaeological relics were found and preserved. This is a historical farm, and thanks to the work of its founders, these artefacts were saved from natural decay.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is a fully washed coffee using a mix of Arusha, Bourbon, Catimor \u0026amp; Typica varietals. The Madan Estate is situated in the Jiwaka Province, near the town of Mt. Hagen in the Waghi Valley. The farm sits at ~1,600m.a.s.l. and is a beautiful example of specialty coffee \u0026amp; the best of Papua New Guinea's coffee offerings. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNative shade trees were planted and managed to promote biodiversity throughout the farm. Chemicals became prohibited and more natural methods were utilized to fight pests and help with soil fertility. Additionally, waste management prevents any harmful wastes from coffee processing to pollute the surrounding ecosystems. The gentle slopes of the plateau negate many of the farming challenges posed by more mountainous and varied terrain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe economy in Laos is overwhelmingly dominated by agriculture, accounting for around 25% of GDP and 73% of the labour force.
